In Abu Dhabi

We have arrived in Abu Dhabi after a surprisingly easy 12-hour flight. I was much distracted because--having once again forgotten the Great Circle--I was surprised to find that we flew over Britain. Otherwise, 1st January 2012 will only stay in my mind as the day that never happened: we hardly saw daylight because the blinds were down for the truncated daytime hours.
